Reverse Transfer
Get your associate degree after transfer
If you transfer to a university before graduating from SAC, you can still earn your associate degree through reverse transfer. This process recognizes your accomplishments and awards you the important credential you deserve. For students who transfer to most Texas universities, this is an automated system.
How does it work?
- Give your university consent to release your transcript to SAC. This is an option on the Apply Texas admission application, which is used for all public universities as well as some private institutions. (If you're not sure you consented or you already graduated with a bachelor's degree, contact your university registrar's office.)
- At the end of each semester, universities automatically send SAC a list of students who may qualify for an associate degree and approved sharing their transcripts.
- SAC evaluates those students' transcripts. You will be notified if you have earned an associate degree.
Am I eligible?
Yes, if:
- You earned at least 30 credits from SAC.
- You transferred from SAC to a four-year college or university.
- You've earned at least 66 credits total, including coursework completed at your university.
Ready for reverse transfer now?
In addition to the automated process, you can request a reverse transfer degree audit at any time. Follow these steps:
- Ask your university's registrar to send an official transcript to San Antonio College.
- Contact Marissa Saenz-Pena at msaenz-pena@dos5.net.
What are the Benefits of Reverse Transfer?
Benefits to Students
- Students are able to achieve a degree milestone while progressing toward their baccalaureate degree and can encourage further degree attainment.
- Research shows greater persistence in students to earn a bachelor's degree in those who have also earned an associate degree.
- Students will have a marketable credential through the associate degree. Employers recognize its value because it shows a student's commitment to improvement, education, and receiving training. An associate degree is considered to be one of the nation's fastest growing work credential.
- Allows for the freedom of early transfer, especially in academic disciplines which promote expedient pathways to the university (e.g., engineering, etc.).
*Students from non-public institutions may apply for an associates degree if they meet the degree eligibility requirements.
