What is the History course of study?

The study of history allows you to understand the people and events that have shaped modern civilization while developing skills applicable to a wide range of professions, including research, critical thinking, writing and communication.

What will I learn?

You’ll explore major historical developments and examine past events from diverse perspectives. You’ll develop the ability to construct historical arguments using evidence from primary and secondary resources. In addition, the study of history develops persuasive reasoning and communication skills that lend themselves to many careers.

What can I do with this course of study?

An associate degree in history serves as the equivalent of your first two years of a bachelor’s degree, allowing you to transfer to a university to continue your studies. A history major can lay the foundation for careers in K-12 and higher education, but also in archives, museums, public history institutions, government, law, management, business, advertising, politics, and other professions that require strong written and oral communication and critical thinking and analysis.

What's special about our program?

When you study history at SAC, you’ll understand the importance of the past in today’s events. The SAC Historians are a community of highly trained educators and scholars who empower you to think deeply about the past from multiple perspectives while honing your critical thinking and communication skills. This program trains you to become a lifelong learner who recognizes, reflects upon, and values personal and social responsibility. We mentor future historians and history educators, providing the support you need to graduate, transfer or enter the workforce. Through active learning in the classroom and activities in our community, you’ll be prepared to succeed in a diverse world marked by continuity and change.
